Step 6: Map the competitive landscape
Phase 1: Preliminary Research · Step 6 of 13
You are not entering an empty market. Every customer you want to serve already has alternatives. Understanding those alternatives is the foundation of your positioning.
Article
Competition is not just the companies that look like what you want to build. It is every alternative your target customer currently uses to solve the problem you are addressing. That includes direct competitors, indirect competitors, substitute solutions, and the most formidable competitor of all: doing nothing.
The purpose of competitive mapping is not to find reasons your idea will fail. It is to understand the landscape well enough to find where you can win. Every competitor has made strategic choices about which customers to serve, which features to build, and which price points to target. Those choices create gaps. Your job is to find the gaps.
Start with the obvious players and work outward. Direct competitors offer similar solutions to similar customers. Indirect competitors solve the same problem in a fundamentally different way. Substitutes are the workarounds and manual processes customers use when they cannot find or afford a purpose-built solution. Each category tells you something different about the market.
For each competitor, you need to understand four things: who they target, what they promise, what they charge, and where customers say they fall short. The first three are available on their websites. The fourth is available in reviews, forums, and social media. The fourth is the most valuable.
Do not fall into the trap of competitive analysis as an ego exercise. The goal is not to convince yourself you are better. The goal is to understand the landscape honestly enough to find a position that is defensible and valuable. Sometimes that analysis reveals there is no good position available. That is a finding worth having before you invest further.
